Meditating with Deepak Chopra

helenI confess I suck at meditating. I’ve heard everyone from Oprah to my uncle Francisco tell me for years how amazing meditating is, and why I need to incorporate it into my schedule. I swear I’ve tried! I’ve set up an amazing space in my apartment, have gone on day retreats and always try it at the end of my yoga class, and nada. Sure I can relax for about 2 minutes before my brain is reminding me that I need to email this person tonight, oh and don’t forget to pick up eggs at Whole Foods on the way home. I would then consciously try to redirect my attention to being present and still, when my brain would then let me know that my legs are kind of tired being cross-legged, and can we please stretch soon?!

One of my resolutions for 2015 was to truly savor every experience, because I have a habit of celebrating only for a few moments, maybe a day or two when I land a huge gig before I’m rushing to find the next big thing. I know I’ve cheapened some of my past wins because of that. When I heard there was an opportunity to meditate in an exclusive setting with Deepak Chopra thanks to Wellthily, and that my friend Terri Cole would be making the opening remarks, I knew it was a sign that I had to be there.

I got to the Refinery Rooftop and picked what I thought was a random yoga mat to sit on, but we all know that that’s not how the Universe works, and I was able to connect with two beautiful souls before Deepak spoke.

I don’t know if it’s because mentally and emotionally I’m in a better place right now, the positive energy around me, or Deepak breaking down the different parts of our brain and meditation, or maybe it was a combination of it all, but when he told us that we were going to meditate for 20 minutes, I was in! Before I knew it, the time had passed and it was time to open our eyes. I can’t explain how great I felt, except that I felt so renewed and like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Since then I haven’t been able to go to 20 minutes again, but I promise I’m getting better! If you are new to meditation or have had problems like I have, I would recommend the Chopra Center website, or if you’re lucky enough to have Deepak come to your time, make sure you go!
